Preparing for Tropical Cyclone Alfred
Current Queensland Government advice states that residents living in Southeast Queensland should expect Tropical Cyclone Alfred to make landfall on Thursday 6 March 2025 anywhere between Bundaberg (north of Brisbane) and northern New South Wales.
The cyclone has the potential to cause damaging winds, heavy rain resulting in flooding and other dangerous conditions. It’s important that you prepare now for the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Alfred and know what to do in case of an emergency.

Prepare
It is vital that you prepare even if you are not ordered to evacuate. Proper preparation will help ensure that all members of your household are safe and will help prevent damage to your home and possessions.
Create or re-stock your emergency kit
An emergency kit should contain all the items your household might need if you are ordered to shelter in place (meaning you cannot leave your home for several days, potentially without power) or evacuate. Make sure you fully charge all electrical devices (e.g. mobile phones and battery packs). Your kit should be waterproof, easy to transport (e.g. in a backpack) and include:
First aid kit, including all medications and scripts | Phone, charger and battery pack | Important documents (e.g. birth certificates) |
Essential toiletries | Water and non-perishable food | Flashlight and batteries |
Forms of identification | A change of clothes | Sentimental items |
Prepare your property
Move loose outdoor items inside or to another safe place if they could cause damage if blown around in high winds (e.g. outdoor furniture, plants, toys, bins and other rubbish). Ensure doors, windows, awnings and blinds are properly shuttered and locked. Try not to store indoor items near doors and windows.
If your property is damaged as a result of winds, flooding, etc., please report it to your Housing Officer as soon as possible once you are safe by contacting our office:

If you are in an emergency situation or need to evacuate
If you are told to shelter in place, stay away from doors and windows by retreating to a central room (e.g. a bathroom) and avoid using wall-powered electrical appliances. Stay informed by listening to official channels using your mobile phone or radio. If you are told to evacuate, leave for your closest evacuation centre immediately, making sure to avoid flood waters and closed roads – bring only the essential items in your emergency kit.
