Disaster Recovery Support Following Tropical Cyclone Alfred

Dear residents 

Support is available for people impacted by Tropical Cyclone Alfred. The types of support you can access might vary depending on where you live, how long you were affected for and the type of impact. 


State Government support:

You can check your eligibility for support offered by the Queensland Government by filling out the eligibility form on the Tropical Cyclone Alfred disaster recovery support page


Alternatively, you can call the Community Recovery Hotline on 1800  173  349. 


At the time of this email, the following areas are entitled to some form of Queensland Government support: 

  • Brisbane – select suburbs only 

  • Gold Coast – all areas 

  • Logan – all areas 

  • Moreton Bay – all areas 

  • Redland – all areas 

  • Scenic Rim – select suburbs only 


Grants:

Grant type 

Description 

The Emergency Hardship Assistance grant is for help with essential needs, food, medication, clothing and temporary accommodation. This grant may be available if you: 

  • live in or are stranded in the affected area 

  • have experienced personal hardship and can’t meet your immediate essential needs. 

Grant amount: 

  • $180 for individuals 

  • up to $900 for families of 5 or more. 

The Essential Services Hardship Assistance grant is only active after 5 days without services. 

The Essential Services Hardship Assistance grant is for help with essential services such as, power, gas, water, and sewage. This grant may be available if: 

  • you live in the affected area 

  • you have lost 1 or more essential services for more than 5 days and are experiencing personal hardship as a result 

  • your utility service provider/s confirm that you lost these essential services. 

Grant amount: 

  • $150 for individuals 

  • up to $750 for families of 5 or more. 

The Essential Household Contents Grant is to replace essential lost household contents, such as bed linen and white goods. This grant may be available if you: 

  • live in the affected area 

  • own the items that have been lost 

  • own or rent the affected residence 

  • are uninsured or unable to claim insurance 

  • meet the income limits. 

We will visit your home to assess the damage. We will need photographic evidence if items must be disposed of. 

Grant amount: 

  • $1,765 for individuals 

  • up to $5,300 for couples or families. 

 

Community Recovery Hubs:

Community Recovery Hubs are a place where residents who are experiencing hardship can apply for grants and obtain emotional and wellbeing support. 

Queensland Government Community Recovery workers will assist with grant applications and offer referrals to other community organisations and government agencies for further assistance.

Mental health support: 

If you’ve been impacted by the severe weather and are experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression, the dedicated Community Recovery Lifeline Hotline is available. Confidentially speak to a qualified disaster counsellor on 1800 116 671 for help 24/7. 


Federal Government support: 

Depending on your circumstances, you might be able to receive Federal Government support in addition to State Government support. 

If you live or work in a disaster area, you might be entitled to the: 

  • Disaster Recovery Allowance (DRA) – a short-term payment (for up to 13 weeks) 

  • Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP) – a lump sum payment. 

You can claim online via your MyGov account (if it is linked to Centrelink) or over the phone by calling 180 22 66.  

Recovery hubs (mentioned above) or service centres (Centrelink offices) can support you to determine your eligibility for these types of support and assist you to apply for the payments. 

You have 6 months to make a claim.

Other types of support and assistance are also available. 

  • National Debt Helpline’s disaster hotline – 1800  007  007 

  • Many banks offer disaster support, such as temporary deferment of loans. Contact your bank directly to discuss further.
