Time to downsize for retirement

You know there will come a day when it’s time to downsize to a smaller home, but you find it stressful both emotionally and physically when you contemplate how to go about it. This is understandable, but when you consider how much it will improve your lifestyle and potentially save you money, you can approach it with a whole new outlook.

Downsizing will be the best thing you ever did!

Regardless of the reason, downsizing to a smaller home or unit is a positive move and one you will probably wish you had done sooner. It frees up your time to do the things you enjoy in life, instead of never ending cleaning and attending to lawns.

Here are some useful tips to inspire you to start downsizing:

    • To keep or not to keep – Now is the time to cull … and be brutal about it: decide what you will keep, and what you will get rid of. Avoid the “maybe” pile as that will likely end up as the largest one, and you’ll have to start all over again.  Ask yourself have I used this item recently and will I use it in my smaller home and the answer is likely no, then it is time to toss it.
    • Start in the small rooms first, such as the laundry, linen cupboard and the rarely used guest room.  Once you’ve tackled these you should be on a roll and ready for the kitchen, living areas and bedrooms.
    • Give yourself plenty of time to downsize as it will most likely take longer than you thought.  Working through one room at a time is the best way to tackle this, and you will probably find it gives you a sense of achievement as you go from room to room.
    • Bequeath some of your treasured pieces to your family and friends.  If there are treasured heirlooms you plan to leave to loved ones in your will, then consider giving them as gifts now so they can enjoy them sooner.  Another upside of bequeathing is you don’t have to unpack them when you move, or find a place to store them when you downsize.
