Peter Willis, the lead minister at Caloundra Church of Christ, has dedicated an incredible 34 years to serving as an Australian Army chaplain. Throughout his career, he has journeyed to conflict zones overseas, offering support to defence personnel during some of the most challenging humanitarian and peacekeeping operations.

What makes Peter’s story so unique is that he didn’t come from a military background. Instead, his inspiration to join the Army came from his older brother.

“He was ministering at the Sunnybank Church of Christ in Queensland when he joined the Army Reserve as a chaplain,” Peter shared. “For him, it was about more than just a change of scenery. It was the adventure, the challenge, the chance to step outside the safe walls of the church and serve his nation. And what struck him most was how incredible it was to minister in that environment.”

His brother's words left a deep impression on Peter: “You have to do this too”. So, Peter began the process of applying to join, feeling a deep calling to test his faith in a place where it could be challenged in ways he’d never imagined.

“I wasn't a combatant, but I realised how incredible it was that I could serve my nation in this way. Being part of something bigger, in my own way, was humbling.”

Though the threat level in his deployments was often low, Peter was never far from the harsh realities of war. “There were moments - rockets falling around us - that reminded me of how fragile everything could be.”

One of the hardest aspects of his work he said was grappling with the moral complexities of war. “You come face to face with the stark contrast between the darkness of evil and the beauty of God’s creation. It's a profound challenge.”

But despite the difficulties, Peter found deep joy in the work he was called to do. “Yes, there are times that test you, but there is also so much joy. And that’s what makes it all worthwhile, what makes it truly special.”

Peter’s story is one of unwavering faith, of embracing both the struggles and the blessings that come with serving others in the most difficult circumstances. Through it all, he continues to serve with compassion, humility, and an unshakeable belief in the power of ministry.
