When Did Churches of Christ Begin in Queensland?

Did you know that Churches of Christ in Queensland can trace its organised beginnings back to 9 August 1883? That means this movement has been part of Queensland's story for 143 years.

Like many Christian movements, there is no single starting point. Long before 1883, believers were gathering in homes, halls and small communities across Queensland. These groups shared a desire to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and build churches based on faith, fellowship and service.

However, 1883 marked an important milestone. It was the year the first Conference of Churches of Christ was held in Queensland. The meeting was called by D.A. Ewers and took place in the home of F.W. Troy in Toowoomba. By that time, there were already seven churches with around 150 members, showing that the movement had begun to take root and grow.

Today, Churches of Christ continues to serve communities across Queensland through local congregations and our Seniors, Children Youth and Families and Housing services. What began as small gatherings of committed Christians has developed into a ministry that touches thousands of lives.

Each year in early August, our churches have the opportunity to celebrate Churches of Christ Sunday. It is a time to remember and give thanks for the faith, dedication and vision of those who came before us. More importantly, it is a time to reflect on the one who remains at the centre of our faith: Jesus Christ.

Jesus preached a message that continues to transform lives today: love, forgiveness, humility and hope. His teachings challenge us to care for one another, extend grace, seek justice and live with the confidence of eternal life through Him.

As we celebrate another year of Churches of Christ in Queensland, we honour our history, give thanks for God's faithfulness, and look forward with hope to the future He has prepared.
