Homesteads 30-year anniversary

There are few milestones worth celebrating quite like 30 years of caring for people. 

On 6 August, residents and their families, staff, former team members and organisational leaders came together to celebrate an extraordinary achievement, the 30th anniversary of Homesteads Residential Aged Care in Nerang. 

The special occasion was more than a birthday celebration. It was an opportunity to reflect on three decades of compassion, friendship and community, and to honour the many people who have helped shape Homesteads into the welcoming and vibrant home it is today. 

From the moment guests arrived, there was a sense of warmth and nostalgia in the air. Historical displays and commemorative booklets sparked conversations and brought back treasured memories, while residents and families shared stories of momentous moments and friendships formed over the years. 

A beautifully presented high tea provided the centrepiece of the celebration, creating an opportunity for everyone to come together, reconnect and reflect on the journey that has brought Homesteads to this significant milestone. 

Board Chair Nigel King opened the event by reflecting on Homesteads' rich history and the many lives that have been touched by the service during the past three decades. CEO Bill Lyon spoke about the future, highlighting Churches of Christ's ongoing commitment to providing quality care and supporting older Australians to live meaningful and connected lives. Executive General Manager Operations Donna Hart shared reflections on the care and dedication that underpin daily life at Homesteads, while Chaplain Leanne spoke about the vital role of community, belonging and relationships in creating a true sense of home. 

One of the day's most memorable moments was the recognition of long-serving staff members whose dedication has helped shape the Homesteads’ community. 

Together, guests celebrated team members who have collectively contributed more than 100 years of service, including: 

• Nora Gerat-Ward (20 years)
• Melanie Vela (19 years)
• Lynne Spalding (19 years)
• Jean Chaytors (18 years)
• Alma Flyckt (16 years)

Several newer team members were also recognised, highlighting the next generation of carers who will continue Homesteads' legacy of compassionate care. 

The celebration also featured a heartfelt musical performance by resident Rose Donnelly, whose songs brought smiles and plenty of applause from the audience. 

Later, Rose joined Bill Lyon and Service Manager Claire Johnston to cut the anniversary cake.

Looking towards the future, a commemorative tree planting served as a powerful symbol of growth, strength and continuity. Nigel King, Bill Lyon, Donna Hart and maintenance team member Peter McWaters worked together to create a living legacy that will continue to grow alongside the Homesteads’ community for years to come. 

With more than 60 residents, family members, staff, former staff and supporters attending, the celebration highlighted what has always been at the heart of Homesteads: people. 

For 30 years, Homesteads has been a place where relationships flourish, where care is delivered with compassion and where residents are supported to live with dignity, independence and purpose. 

As the community celebrated, there was a shared appreciation for the generations of residents, families, volunteers and staff who have contributed to its story. 

Here's to 30 years of care, laughter, friendship and connection, and to the many chapters still to come.
