Christmas, made by hand and shared at every door
Christmas, made by hand and shared at every door
There's something about Christmas that draws people a little closer. The tree goes up, familiar carols drift down the hallway, and a place starts to feel even more like home.
Last December, that feeling found its way into every corner of our communities, often through the smallest of gestures.
At Toowoomba Aged Care, it began with resident Maureen and her knitting needles. Stitch by stitch, she created handmade decorations that soon hung from the Christmas trees and brightened spaces throughout the home. Residents would stop to thank her and admire her work, and before long Maureen was sharing her skills too, helping fellow residents in small knitting groups.
And then it was the volunteers' turn to be looked after. After a year of generously giving their time, they were welcomed to a Christmas party in their honour, a chance for the community to thank the people who keep showing up.

Out west in St George, the volunteers at Warrawee Aged Care had their own way of wrapping residents in Christmas cheer. They handmade a wreath for every resident, giving both their time and the cost of every wreath. Each resident chose their favourite, and one by one the wreaths went up on each bedroom door.
For our volunteers, the wreaths were only the beginning. Throughout the season they went carolling, made Christmas bon-bons, spent time visiting residents, and even took residents out to see the local Christmas lights.
At Clive Burdeu Aged Care, the annual Christmas party brought the whole community together. Residents dressed up in their Christmas shirts and were joined by families, staff and volunteers, with everyone singing Christmas carols together.
At a celebration for our hard-working volunteers, Chaplain Mike reminded everyone of the reason behind it all. He spoke of the birth of Jesus and the peace, hope and joy that Christmas brings. A gift that is meant for everyone.

On Bribie Island Aged Care, more than 40 residents and their families gathered for a Christmas morning tea. The morning was full of games, with pass the parcel, riddles and a Christmas song quiz, before everyone joined in to sing to the classic carols. To finish, the Lifestyle team took centre stage with their own performance of “The 12 Days of Christmas”.
Music has a special way of finding people at Bribie Island. Since their first visit in December 2024, the singers of Hallway Harmonies, members of a local theatre company, have returned every few months with a new themed performance. Last Christmas, they walked the corridors and paused outside each room to sing carols. so those who couldn’t make it to the lounge had the music brought right to their door.

Whether it was a wreath chosen for a bedroom door or in a song sung outside a resident's room, at every site, the message was the same: there's always room for one more.
As another Christmas draws near, that invitation still stands. Whoever you are, come as you are. There's a place for you here.
Here's another Christmas full of warmth, welcome and wonder.
