What happens when churches and communities come together

What starts as a conversation can change a life.

At Southport Church of Christ, a small community group called English Chat began with just three people wanting to improve their English and a handful of volunteers willing to help. Today, it has grown into a thriving community of more than 30 people who gather regularly, build friendships and support one another. Along the way, lives have been transformed, with some participants finding not only connection, but also faith and a church community to belong to.

This was one of many stories shared during Churches of Christ's recent annual Regional Gatherings, where church leaders, pastors, ministry teams and church members come together from across Queensland to celebrate what God is doing in their communities.

From Cairns to Toowoomba and Townsville to Ipswich, the Regional Gatherings highlighted something powerful: while our ministries and services may look different, we are united by a shared purpose to walk alongside people, demonstrate Christ's love and build stronger, more connected communities.

Across Churches of Christ, faith is expressed every day through practical acts of service and connection.

Whether it's supporting older Australians through aged care and retirement living, providing safe and affordable housing, walking alongside children, young people and families, or serving through local churches, our shared mission remains the same – caring for people and helping them flourish.

The stories shared at the Regional Gatherings were a reminder that ministry often happens in everyday moments.

In our housing communities, more than 800 free Bibles have been distributed to residents through a growing Bible project that is now expanding to seniors, staff and volunteers across our network.

At Slacks Creek Housing, newly appointed chaplain Adam Penman is helping create connection and belonging through coffee catch ups, craft activities, games, Bible studies and monthly community barbecues.

In the Redlands, a simple idea to bring together an op shop, church and free community breakfast has grown into a thriving weekly gathering that now welcomes around 150 people, creating a place where people can enjoy a meal, find support and build meaningful relationships.

Meanwhile, at Burleigh Heads Church of Christ, volunteers are opening their doors throughout winter to provide shelter, warmth and a hot meal for people doing it tough.

Each story is unique. Together, they paint a picture of communities where faith is not simply spoken about, but lived out through compassion, hospitality and service.

One of the strongest themes emerging from the Regional Gatherings was the value of connection.

Churches of Christ has always been more than a collection of services, churches and programs. We are a connected community united by faith and committed to sharing God's love in practical ways.

The Regional Gatherings provided an opportunity for people from different regions, churches and service areas to learn from one another, celebrate successes and discover new opportunities to collaborate.

For many attendees, hearing stories from across the network was both encouraging and inspiring.

As one participant reflected, "It was very informative and provided valuable insight into the church sector and how we connect through multiple programs."

Another shared, "I loved hearing stories from the region of God at work."

These reflections capture the heart of what makes Churches of Christ what it is today. The work happening in our churches strengthens our services. The experiences from our aged care homes, housing communities and family services inform and inspire ministry. Together, each part contributes to a larger story of faith in action.

While more than 400 people attended this year's Regional Gatherings, the impact extends far beyond those in the room.

Every day across Queensland, Churches of Christ staff, volunteers, pastors and community members are creating opportunities for people to connect, belong and experience hope.

Sometimes that looks like an English conversation class. Sometimes it's a community barbecue, a warm meal, a safe place to sleep, or a Bible shared with someone searching for purpose.

Whatever form it takes, it reflects our commitment to walking alongside people, serving with compassion and living out the love of Jesus in the communities we call home.

And as these stories continue to grow, so too does the impact of a connected community working together in faith.
