Celebrating 140 Years of Churches of Christ

Churches of Christ in Queensland have a rich history of unity, growth, and service. From our beginnings in 1883, the church has been dedicated to spreading the gospel, caring for the vulnerable, and providing Christian education. 

In honour of our 140-year anniversary, we have produced six videos highlighting the remarkable individuals, including children, who have tirelessly kept the spirit of Jesus alive throughout the years. Their unwavering dedication has positively impacted our community across Queensland, touching the lives of countless people.

1. Foundations - ‘A story of unity’

From its very beginnings in 1880, The Churches of Christ story has always been one of Unity.

At a time when momentum was growing to unite Australia as one federation Churches of Christ’s future leaders were coming together to bring many different churches under one name too – Jesus Christ. And so, in the late 1800s, the story of Churches of Christ in Queensland began.

2. Early church growth - ‘Built upon baptism’

Early church growth was built upon one Lord, one faith and one baptism.

. Early church growth was built upon one Lord, one faith and one baptism. Rivers have always been a special gathering places – a source of life and wellbeing, and to Jesus, a place to understand the ways of God through baptism.

3. Women and social services - Our heroic women and the birth of social services

At a time when heroic Australian soldiers marched off into battle in World War One,

Churches of Christ was cultivating its own heroes on our home shore – an army of women dedicated to delivering social services for all.

4. Educating youth - ‘A time for optimism. A time to educate.’

5. Homes for the aged, families and all - ‘First we built a community. Then, homes.’

In the post war era, prosperity and optimism weren’t the only thing growing. Our church had grown into a position to provide the most important thing of all to the needy – a home.

Our hard-working community provided homes for weary travellers, homeless children, youth, families and aged citizens. In 1950, the very first home was purchased – a Christian guest house in Spring Hill, called Burdeu House. Run under the outstanding leadership of Clive Burdeu, this house marked the first step of Churches of Christ’s pathway to care for the most vulnerable.

6. The next chapter - ‘The story of unity, love and care lives on’

In 2023, we celebrate 140-years of Churches of Christ in Queensland. A story of goodness, of kindness, of overcoming challenges to display unconditional love. A story of unity that has changed lives. A story that you are part of.

We support over 5,000 young people, families and carers, provide over 2,000 homes, through housing, care for over 14,000 residents in seniors living and aged care and reach over 12,000 people through the work of our churches each week.
