Giving a lending hand for less than two hours a week

In the lead up to National Volunteer Week from 20 to 26 May, Bribie Island Aged Care Service is calling for passionate locals to donate their time towards making a difference in the lives of older Australian in a caring and fun short or long-term volunteer role.

Volunteers at Churches of Christ Care’s Bribie Island Aged Care Service contribute to enriching the lives of residents, staff and other volunteers, sharing as little as two hours a week of their time.

Bribie Island Aged Care Service Manager, Anna Ward said the service has a strong volunteering community who are committed to making a difference.

“Volunteers have a great sense of satisfaction from the moment they walk through the door, making a world of difference by giving someone a bit of joy, laughter and companionship through creating a personal relationship with residents,” Ms Ward said.

Local kindergarteners have also become a part of Bribie’s volunteering family, attending the aged care service with their teachers one day a week to visit all residents and offer them a smile and a hug.

Volunteers are provided with full on-site training and support and can assist with bus outings, activities, transport, meal times and the onsite café.

“Some roles are also applicable to students seeking work experience who can assist qualified staff to facilitate physical and mental exercises in the seniors’ gym, and attend weekly social activities, providing companionship to residents,” Ms Ward said.

The aged care service’s onsite café is a large contributor to resident social activities and requires volunteers for four hours a day to help operate. The role will include counter service, preparing coffee and tea, and an assortment of deli items.

Bribie Island Aged Care Service will be hosting a morning tea this National Volunteer Week to recognise and thank its 92 volunteers.
