Family Day Care facts and benefits

Family day care offers a convenient and flexible child care option, but is it the right choice for your children? The following facts and benefits may help you decide.

    Facts about Family Day Care:

    • Family day care has been operating in Australia for over 40 years.
    • Parents are eligible for Federal Government Child Care Benefit and Child Care Rebate subsidies.
    • All family day care educators are guided by the principles and practices of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), and work within the requirements of the National Quality Framework.
    • Family day care educators are required to obtain at minimum a Certificate III in education and care, and must meet and maintain national standards. Participation in ongoing training, meetings and workshops are mandatory in order to maintain up-to-date skills and knowledge.
    • Educators must at all times hold current first aid and CPR certificates and training in the emergency management of asthma and anaphylaxis.
    • All educators need to hold and maintain a clearance for working with children (Blue Card / Exemption Card).
    • Approved Providers through a Coordination Unit support and monitor educators and the progress of the children in their care through regular home visits and assessments.
    • Family day care is the major provider of regulated, flexible, non-standard hours child care.

Benefits of Family Day Care for your family:

    • Your child is cared for and educated in a home based setting, offering a safe and secure learning environment.
    • Educators work with small groups of up to four children under school age. They may also care for three additional school age children outside of school hours.
    • The small group environment encourages strong bonds and promotes effective early learning and social development.
    • Siblings aged from babies to school age can be cared for in one location.
    • The hours can be broader than those of an early childhood centre, and can include standard hours, evenings, before/after school, during school holidays and in some cases overnight and weekends.
