Voices in action: Nothing about us, without us

Churches of Christ Care is excited to announce Diamond sponsorship of the 2019 CREATE Conference, Voices in action: nothing about us, without us.

CREATE will hold this year’s event at Melbourne Zoo from 14 - 16 November, bringing together key decision makers from across the child protection sector to explore the issues identified by young people with an out-of-home care experience and create real and sustainable change.

The focus will be on how children and young people can be included in decision making that effects them, how to best support young people leaving care and where improvements can be made to ensure young people are heard and understood.

“It is not uncommon to hear stories from young people who have moved homes 60 to 100 times before the age of 18. Without the stability of a home their ability to engage with their education and build meaningful relationships is diminished,” Churches of Christ Care, Children, Youth and Families General Manager Leanne Rutherford said.

“Children and young people who have experienced this kind of uncertainty are at higher risk of homelessness after leaving out of home care.

“We share a real commitment to supporting young people to thrive.

“Our Youth CONNECT program was the first of its kind in Australia, that it takes a holistic look at reducing the risk and creating ‘homefulness’ through education, work readiness and personal development.”

In 2017 the CREATE conference attracted 430 delegates from across Australia. Some of the take-away benefits included gaining a greater understanding of current thinking within the child protection sector and hearing directly from young people.

“The conference had great guest speakers, but the best part was listening to young people share their stories. The conference was a place for young people to feel respected, cared for, heard, build confidence, have their say, share knowledge and feel empowered” 2017 delegate.

Who is this conference for?

  • Young people with a care experience between 12 and 25 years of age who want to meet others with similar life experience in a fun environment and share their wisdom about being in care.

  • Sector leaders looking for a grassroots approach to tackling old problems with fresh perspectives
