Aged care residents get busy at the gym

Churches of Christ Care Bribie Island Aged Care Service recently celebrated the official opening its new, specially designed gym, with plenty of VIPs present.

The service was honoured to host Pumicestone MP, Rick Williams; Deputy Mayor of Moreton Bay Council, Councillor Mike Charlton; and Councillor Brooke Savige as ‘Busy’s Gym’ – named in honour of local fundraisers, Busy Fingers – officially opened its doors.

The gym specifically caters for seniors, irrespective of their age or physical ability. It is a place that focuses on what they can do, rather than what they cannot.

Service Manager Anna Ward, staff and residents were also joined by Bryan Mason, Liz Drew and Judy McCrow from Churches of Christ Care’s head office, who thanked the Busy Fingers team for their very kind donation of the specialised gym equipment.

The innovative gym was originally introduced into Churches of Christ Care Buckingham Gardens Aged Care Service in 2015, and supports our Positive Wellbeing Model of Care, which promotes person-centred care and individual preferences and enablement.

Since the gym’s installation at Bribie Island five weeks ago, there’s been nothing but great outcomes for the residents.

Those who are in wheelchairs are able to perform exercises at the pulley machine, which adapts to their capabilities at the push of a button. Onsite physiotherapists uncovered novel ways to use this pulley machine, developing many innovative exercises using this one machine alone.

In consultation with a physiotherapist, users are issued a swipe card with their personalised exercise program. Once the card is inserted to any machine, the weight and number of repetitions they can safely lift is automatically set. It also keeps a record of their regime and progress meaning an accurate review of results.

There are plans for the equipment to be rolled out to our residential aged care services at Mitchelton, Stanthorpe and new developments at Boonah, Meridan and Warwick.
